Labiaplasty

Conveniently located to serve in Austin, TX

LabiaplastyDue to the sensitive nature of the vagina, women who aren’t happy with the appearance of their outer vagina may find it difficult to discuss their issues with a medical professional. There are many factors that can contribute to enlarged labia, including childbirth, health conditions, and genetics. Sometimes these factors can make the vagina appear unappealing. In such cases, women may find themselves feeling insecure with their appearance and struggle with their bodily image.

In addition to cosmetic problems, enlarged labia can also make it difficult to wear certain clothes or perform physical activities like bike riding or intercourse. Fortunately, women don’t have to live with this problem forever. Thanks to labiaplasty, Daniela Atencio, MD, can help women achieve an improved quality of life.

What Is Labiaplasty??

A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that’s designed to decrease the size of the labia for a more proportional and aesthetically pleasing vaginal region. The surgery can address both cosmetic and functional issues associated with the vagina. A cosmetic labiaplasty is performed simply to enhance the appearance of the vagina for women.

Women who undergo a labiaplasty for functional reasons often experience pain while having sex or while performing certain physical activities. The goal of the procedure is to eliminate darkened areas, reduce the size of the vaginal lips, and enhance symmetry.

Good Candidates for a Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is an excellent solution for women who have asymmetrical or loose vaginal lips or are dissatisfied with the color and appearance of the vagina. It is also great for those who feel pain and discomfort during sex and other physical activities or while wearing certain types of clothing. Daniela Atencio, MD, will perform an initial examination of your vaginal area and ask you about your medical history to determine if labiaplasty is the right solution for you.

Your Consultation

Women experiencing physical discomfort or a lack of self-confidence created by the issues that labiaplasty can address are encouraged to proceed with a consultation. During your consultation, Dr. Atencio will listen to your concerns and perform an examination.

Dr. Atencio will go over your complete medical history, including past procedures, current medications, allergies, and any pre-existing conditions. She will then create a surgical plan for your labiaplasty. She will discuss this plan in great detail, including information regarding preparation and aftercare. Questions are highly encouraged.

Preparing for Your Labiaplasty

Before undergoing a labiaplasty, it’s important that you maintain a healthy diet, stay hydrated, and receive plenty of rest. You will be advised to stop smoking, drinking alcohol, and taking certain medications to reduce the chance of complications. Following the pre-surgical instructions provided to you will help facilitate a successful surgery and a fast recovery.

The Labiaplasty Procedure

After administering the anesthetic, Daniela Atencio, MD, will begin the surgical process by making small incisions in the treatment area. With close attention to detail and precise hands, she will remove the excess skin and redistribute the remaining skin while retaining the sensitivity and functionality of the vagina. Once the necessary corrections are made, she will then close the incisions.

The surgery may take about one to two hours to complete, depending on the extent of correction required. Since it is performed as outpatient surgery, you can safely return home the same day it is performed. Patients may find it more comfortable to arrange for transportation afterwards, but it is not required.

Recovering from a Labiaplasty

After undergoing a labiaplasty, it is important that you take some time to rest and relax as you recover. You should make sure to take time off work for about a week and avoid sexual activities for about five weeks to ensure proper healing.

As with any procedure that involves making surgical incisions, some swelling and discomfort is to be expected, but these conditions are generally resolved quickly without intervention.

During the healing process, patients will be restricted from bathing, hot tubs, or swimming. Patients should avoid clothing that will bunch up or create pressure in the vaginal area.

How Much Does Labiaplasty Cost?

The cost of the labiaplasty procedure depends on individual case details. The price of labiaplasty is not usually covered under health insurance plans unless it is well-documented and pre-approved as a medically necessary reconstruction procedure. The office staff can provide information regarding accepted forms of payment.
